Question 4: How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The first technology I used in this project was www.unsigned.com, we used this website to select our track. Unsigned.com allowed us to select any track from the website without worrying about complicated copyright laws. Unsigned.com also categorised artists into genre making the site easy to use. The website gave lots of information as well as contact details so we could ask for permission. Unfortunately our band did not reply to our request however the fact that the artist was not signed meant that we could use it anyway.
Facebook was the main social network used in the project. We used facebook firstly to contact the band, however our messages were unsuccessful. The next main use of the site was to contact our target audience to gain research from them as well as get a good source of feedback. We exhibited our final music video through a youtube link onto our facebook pages and got some positive feedback from our target audience.

Another website used to gather information was the BBC radio website, as the band had been interviewed by a local BBC radio station , this interview was very helpful in shaping our ideas.

Youtube was the main method of research into music promos as it gave us access to millions of music video which inspired us .Youtube also gave a clear idea of what conventions were for each genre and which elements of these videos worked and didn't work. Youtube was used to exhibit our music promo, it was a good place for exhibition as millions of people could access the video and leave feedback, the range of people who could watch would give us a variety of ideas and improvements.

Some examples of inspiration videos we found from youtube were:
Kid Cudi's 'Pursuit of Happiness'
Justin beiber - 'beauty and the beat'
The hang over
Project X
Bruno mars- just the way you are
Jamie t- sticks n stones
Coldplay- strawberry swing

Having access to both professional an amateur videos gave us lots of ideas for our video and taught us techniques . We also used youtube to help us edit our video with help from video tutorials teaching us how to use specific effects in Imovie and Final cut.

Some other similar site to Youtube which we used were sites such as Vimeo and Vevo, which also provided many music videos.

When making our production we used a variety of different technologies. When making the music video the main technology we used was Imovie.
Imovie was the programme used to put all our clips together and edit using all the tool provided. We ordered clips, cut clips, added transitions, effects, altered colours, lighting and speed. We also used the advanced tools option when making our
green screen effect.

We imported our track from Itunes where we synced it in Imovie.

Iphoto was used to organise our stop motion, we imported our photos into iphoto to sort them out before uploading to imovie where we turned stills into film.

We also used final cut to experiment with the green screen effect, however by using youtube tutorials we found a much simpler method using Imovie

To film the footage and take photographs we used a digital camera and tripod, the tripod was helpful to gain different angled shots, whilst still maintaining a steady frame. However we did you a lot of free hand shots to create the lively atmosphere.

When creating our Digipak and Advert we also used a range of editing software.
Ribbet online photo editor was used as we found a good font which worked well with our sketchy theme. The editor also helped us to alter colours and add interesting effects.

Photoshop was used in our advert and digipak to arrange and cut out images, it was very good for producing these products as there was such a large range of edting tools and effects to choose from.

We also used google to find an image of lined paper which we could edit and then incorporate into our advert.

When creating the advert and digipak we drew the drawings of the bottle and train of sheets of paper which we had to scan as this gave a higher quality image result compared to using a camera.

Since As level media I think editing skills have improved due to the task of producing a music video as there was much more technical editing to do such as syncing and cutting clips in time to music. where as AS was more about order and effects. By editing a music video we have experimented with as had to use new technologies such as final cut and advanced settings in Imovie.
We first used final cut in our prelim  task where we cut out the lips of a fish and replaced them with singing human lips. This experiment worked well and was an idea which we wanted to use in our real music video as we thought it would give the video a fun quirky edge. We altered the concept to fit our other themes and ideas and came up with the idea of a moving drawing. At first we tried to use the same techniques as the prelim task however after looking through tutorial videos we discovered a much easier method using Imovie advanced options. After a few tests we achieved the result we had planned.

This our Imovie method, it worked very well to achieve the result we wanted
From doing this prelim we learnt that we had to keep the actors head very still so that it did not move out of the shape we had cut out.

Another editing issue we over came was changing image levels to match up shots, such as exposure, brightness, saturation. We used the apple mac technology witch programmes such as Imovie and Photoshop to fix our shots and stills.

Since As level our shooting skills have developed as we had learnt from the previous year and preliminary tasks to always use a tripod when needed as this will make shots more stable and professional, Make a clear shooting plan to avoid confusion , as we learnt from our prelim filming, for our music video we made sure we made shooting scripts, story boards, maps, walk throughs and other research and planning first.
In our As project we also struggled with lighting, wanting to use dark party shots at A2 was going to be a problem as we had learnt cameras were poor at filming in dark conditions, however we tried using alternative cameras and making lighting plans, unfortunately we still had issues with lighting but the dark shots was needed for the idea and conventions of this style of video.
When filming the stop motion we tests different lighting to check what worked best. we treid regular school lighting, and LED lamp and a spotlight , however found that school lighiting was more natural looking and suited to our plan.

Another shooting problem we overcame was the lack of actors for our party scenes, we wanted shots to look busy and lively like in our inspiration videos. To get this effect we framed shots closely to fill the frame we everyone.

Throughout the production Blogger has been used to keep track of all research and developments and has been helpful to refer back to, especially when looking at audience research and inspirational videos.

Prezi has been used to present information in an interesting way on my blog.

Using these online technologies as a form of exhibition has allowed us a greater range of feedback as through social networking sites we have received comments from lots of people and had our products seen by a variety of different people.
Online exhibition has also given our products a larger audience as many people have seen the promotional materials which has publicised the track, unlike traditional methods of exhibition online exhibition has access to vast amounts of people and places.
