indie genre

The indie genre is originally from the word 'independant' when small movements of artists and bands started to experiment with sounds using low budget, DIY equipment. The experimental style heavily involved this music style into other art forms such as film and painting. One of the first key indie/experimental artists to surface was Captain Beefheart in 1969, who brought together a wide range of existing genres such as pop, rock, jazz and poerty to create inspirational music which inspired many artists including The beatles.
The promotion of artists and band like Captain Beefheart was also very DIY and low budget, despite offers from glamourous record companies, indie artist created logos and slogans which became exclusive and cool.
In the 70's the indie genre became more popular as larger band such as joy division, the ramones and the fall, brought attention to the indie scene.

By the 80's indie was a well known and clear cut genre and had indie bands appearing on hit TV show Top of the Pops.
In 1989 Reading Festival came up with a line-up devoted to indie
music. Indie was overtaking rock and pop, by the 1990s and 2000s Indie music increasingly mainstream, with Manic Street Preachers, Belle and Sebastian, the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, and the Libertines making Indie music commercially viable and beating pop and rock acts to the top of the charts.
However debate was caused of what was 'indie' anymore as the original indie music scene was small, unique and experimental to every other genre.
in 2006 The genre was introduced to the internet by The Artic Monkeys, whose album broke record sales and brought the indie genre back with a new twist for a new generation.
