Radiohead - no suprises analysis

No suprises is a great example of didjuncture as it has no relation to the lyrics and is a very bizaire idea.
Bands generally use this type of vidoe to make a statement, get noticed or show that they are unique.
There is only one shot throughout the video which is a close up of the face showing singing. The use of one shot does not allow editing as it it all done in one take.
Lighting in the video is key as the vidoe begins with a series of lights flashing and moving. these in tme to the music. As the vidoe starts off dark and mysterious it gradually gets brighter reavling the identity of the person.
As the song progresses and get louder the lighting suddenly becomes bright and intense. This is editing in time with the music ready to show clearly that the screen is filling up with water.
Lyrics appear on the screen reversed to the viewer, which adds to the confusion of the video.
there is not much to say about mise en scene as all we see is a head, however there is purposly no expression which could express the mood of the song.
As the song comes to an end there is lots of layers as there is the lyrics in the foreground, the face and water and as the light fades they have edited the first shot to fade into the background.

Although the initial idea of this video is confusing, this represents the song in a unique way from the artists ideas giving it underlying meanings.
