Artists and repertoire are talent scouts from record lables who find and then develop bands to make hit records.
How it works:
-A&R go to gigs
-they reccomend a label to sign them
-they choose producers, engineers and studios
-they give the band an image
-they pick and propmote their best track or find them new material.
-the get the artist retail sales and radio promotion.
Now A&R want artists who have big followings already before signing up and this will garantee them sales. They look for things such as large social network followings, lots of tours and self promotion.
Site such as Myspace, youtube and spotify are key for self promotion.
Marketing is expensive. pop marketing generally costs £1,000,000 and spends most of this on videos, where as rock is around £700,00.
Videos are essential for researching music, these can be found on myspace, youtube, social networks and tv channles.
The digital age has changed marketing, labels take a far more innavotive approach as internet success has ment digital sales from sites such as amazon and itunes have increased, meaning more royalties for artists. Some artists who have benfited form an internet following are lana del ray and the arctic monkeys.
